Contribution + Interview

PosterINFORMATION: Born as a joke, by mistake, from a work dayly action, from a normal job as the lumberjack one. treefristing was born in an ordinary day, when, instead of using a chainsaw for 9 hours, you have to dig throught roots for 9 hours to let lanyards pass in order to anchor every part of a forest cableway that transports logs to the valley bottom. you use a pick, a crowbar, a hammer to split stones. you have to stuff your hand to remove soil and mud from the hole you're making. the pleasure when you can pass throught the hole is indescribable and when you pull out your hand full of mud.....well...you got it!

We call it a new conception to live the relationship between nature and man (we meant an intercourse), but i believe that treefisting was born to show our job better than it really is.

At once we created a group on F.A.C.ebook, where we posted the first pictures of this new practice, movement of ideas or fetishism, it's not classifiable. We wanted to see people's reaction, some of them said that we were loafers, some of them said that we were maniacs, some said that we were insane, but then gradually it became what we wanted, thanks to an official T-shirt contest that raffled off 100 euros and an art stay for two people in a hut for a week in May 2013. In this hut we'll create something, we don't not what yet, but we decided that the main thing is to create something, i think we'll just give a theme, but everything we'll be free and we are sure that something we'll be awesome! We'll execute what we have in our minds. In this case treefisting is an accepted mistake, i mean, i probably could be one of the many sillynesses and visions that we create when we are working in the forests, but this time we had a spring that made us make something subversive, as our job needs a safety valve to be fullfilled at the best. In brief, treefisting is a distortion of reality, it's like calling a whore escort and an incinerator (in inglese si chiama incinerator lo stesso, non c'è differenza tra i due), the result doesn't change, but you see it in a better way, simply changing its name. Treefisting progressed in other subcategories: necrotreefisting, treebondage, snowtreefisting..all new ideas that can bring new ideas...

Dominik Stahlberg bei der Arbeit, 2013

Since April 29, 2013 they reside in the Bait del Simela until May 5 at an altitude of 2,000 meters in the middle of the Dolomites (this is how it looks up there right now http://treefisting.blogspot.it/). They are: Nicola Degiampietro from Fiera di Primiero in Trentino, Dominik Stahlberg from Hildesheim in Germany, Namsal Siedlecky from Tuscany, Helena Hladilovà from the Czech Republic, Veronica Pellegrin from Truden and Pierangelo Giacomuzzi from Moena (also one of the initiators - here also the interview with him about this project).

Initiated by the artist duo Treefisters (new conception of man-nature relationship), the artists-in-residence Hole’s Lovers is located on the border of the two valleys Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme and can be reached both from Moena and Predazzo (if you click here or here you will know exactly where to go).

Little by little we will introduce you to the six artists here on franzmagazine. Today Dominik Stahlberg gives us a deeper insight into his work and thinking.

You can then meet the six in person on May 3, 2013 at 5 p.m. at the Istitut Cultural Ladin in Vigo di Fassa at the talk with Claus Soraperra. Or at the final presentation on May 6, 2013 at 6 pm at the Centro Arte Contemporanea Cavalese (the exhibition goes until May 20, 2013, 9 pm). Everything worth knowing and curious can also be found on the blog: treefisting.blogspot.it.

Who are you?
Apart from the F.A.C.t that this question cannot be answered with absolute certainty, I am a male, 35 years old reflector of my strange environment. I have been living and working since about 2007 mainly in Carrara, which is famously located in Tuscany. Sculpture and installation are my favorite playgrounds, but I never quite got the stone-eater out of me, so the marble here in Carrara keeps me in chains and forces me to alienate selbigen as a medium of my thoughts purpose. This has the advantage of a continuous production of three-dimensional art objects, but the disadvantage of being absolutely brutal province. Carrara is beautiful and at the same time butt-ugly! But since I'm not an old resident, I don't have to deal with this in the very least. I have an escape perspective..

Thanks to the Internet, however, I manage to overcome this cultural wasteland and to accompany projects all around Europe, to exhibit and, above all, to travel.

What else am I? NO!art-Aktivist / stone sculptor / pirate / amateur astronomer / dog owner / doubter / tattooed / smoker and I love to gorge myself on the "finer things" in life. In the end, though, it's easier to approach this question by asking: what am I not? - I am not an asshole.

Why are you a Hole's Lover?
When I first heard about the Tree Fister project, I was excited from the start. The concept is so crazy that either no one will care or it will become a no-brainer. I have always liked these spontaneous ideas, in this case born from the thoughts of my Toast colleague Pierangelo Giacomuzzi (A.d.R.: Toast = workshop for young art initiatives in Carrara). Many of such inspirations unfortunately always remain trapped under the skullcap, all the more I pay respect to the work of Pier to bring together different people and see what you can elicit this theme roundabout around the "Baumfisterei" so.

Nature + Art + Void/Hole = ?
An experiment. - Nature and art vs. hole and emptiness, the eternal battle between good & bad, which we all carry within us. I think the art lies in setting priorities and never forgetting that we are part of nature, that the hole and the void will get us all soon enough and that the interim is to be filled with art in the broadest sense. Of course it depends on having enough to eat and a roof over the head, but there we Europeans belong (still) to the beneficiaries. Every dear day I move about 2.5 hours through the beautiful nature of the Apuan Alps (dog), see the seasons come and go, squirrels jump and hear the wild boars squeak. Unfortunately, however, I lack the German-romantic vein to glorify nature in all your splendor; I belong to it, take it as it is and take my dirt back with me when I visit. However, as a Nordic flatland child, I have discovered my affection for the mountains. Great! Mountains! Absolutely love the location of the Art Residence! ...even if it might still be freezing cold...

I learned quite a bit about the hole and the void during a three-month stay in the Old City of Jerusalem earlier this year; and I will try to work through that (at least in part) during the residency. Among other things, I had the dubious pleasure of participating in restoration work at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and am still under severe culture shock, so to speak. I did not expect this: If you are looking for hatred, lies, discord and, above all, craving for recognition, you have come to the right place. The situation in the holiest church of Christendom is worse than in the worst harbor bar and I am really not squeamish. Six denominations that don't give each other the butter on their bread. This religious tourism, the targeted paternalism of millions of people, scare me. Nothing against faith or misbelief or what-ever, only this industry, this profane money and envy machine has me but something in front of the head. At the grave of Jesus... - if he knew! Nevertheless I had the opportunity to realize some art projects there, among other things a photo series of believers at the anointing stone. These I will integrate during the Residence in an installation, which takes the said fetish as a model, only with changed signs. Quasi away from hole and emptiness -> Back to Nature!

Hole/void versus environment/nature: conducive or/and limiting to creativity?
Tricky. Personally I prefer to work indoors, I get my inspiration from our society. I'm not an abstract form junkie. The vastness of nature has a rather limiting effect on me, I can only guess at this system, but not understand it. Illustrate not at all, there you always lose. In addition, I always fall after longer viewing of this miracle in the search for meaning and that brings me no further. What pleases me, however, is the exchange with other creatives, everyone approaches such a topic differently, brings his experience and passion. So I then see similarities and differences, the latter always a little more, but that's another issue ....

If we can get through this week without camp fever and discord, we've already won a lot. Artists are known to be no simple-minded contemporaries. But I am a complete optimist! Among other things, I find it amusing how our concept is described to possible visitors / residents, how we get the hang of it, I'm curious ...

Keyword -> Treefister! I have participated in some sculpture symposiums and art projects, worldwide, and I must say that the most important thing about "working together" is to get a certain dynamic going. If this doesn't happen, if everyone just does their thing, a project has failed. The trick is to take your ego back and foster a dialogue so that you "come out" richer than you "went in." Unfortunately, this is not the rule, but an exception. But maybe that's where my romantic streak lies hidden, you never know. Since I belong with my 35 years under the Hole's Lovers already to the old iron (new German: Gammelfleisch), I will hold back with wisdoms, because I always hated it, if someone wanted to explain the world to me. Anyway... I'll do my best to have a lot of fun.

What gets in the way of your creative work?
Here it becomes difficult not to fall into platitudes. Only so much, when I feel "unloved", my works drift into an aggressive-destructive habitus, which is sometimes necessary, but in the long run ...oppresses me. I don't want to propagate a cuddle course here, ("No tail is as hard as life!" - H. Schimanski), but confirmation, in whatever way, is essential. The term "unloved" is also rather of a general nature with me.

What, on the other hand, promotes it?
My dear wife. Projects like this. Moderate alcohol consumption. Life-affirming attitude. Sex.

ABOUT FRANZMAGAZINE: franz is a creative, cheeky company that stimulates and promotes a contemporary and innovative, multilingual and inclusive, creative and visionary South Tyrol, Trentino and Tyrol.

Can it be more precise?
We make a magazine, report live from events, write about initiatives, create networks and synergies, invent and organize events and projects, offer marketing and communication services, realize videos and photo shoots, do scouting and mentoring of new talents. Is that enough?

Aha, interesting, but what is this magazine all about?
franzmagazine is a container for all the exciting things that happen and take place in South Tyrol, Trentino and Tyrol. We bring stories of people and lives, tell about things and initiatives that, in our opinion, make this region... see answer number 1 ...happen. In short, we focus on those things that we like and that we think you like. franzmagazine is also and mainly multilingual, which means that everyone writes, speaks, comments as he or she sees fit, nothing is translated.

So you only exist online? You won't find us on paper, no! We like paper, but it's expensive and not exactly environmentally friendly and slower. Offline, in real life, you will find us wherever something is happening - because we are there - on the spot - and report about it in real time. You'll recognize us by our FranzPlatz sign and the microphone we might hold under your nose to ask for your opinion.

What actually interests me most is the name: Why franz?
We prefer to focus on people. That's how we write. And that's how we tell stories: about people, about projects and initiatives. And the people behind them. We were looking for a name that fits us, German, Italian, female, male, cheeky and fresh, not too serious and serious. We had long lists and always came back to the idea that it "should be something like franz"... So franz actually found us.

When did it start?
It happened back then, on March 2, 2010.

Are you traveling alone?
Not at all! We work with many interesting initiatives throughout the area: from independent concert promoters to international museums, from small innovative businesses to penniless artists, from Buschenschank to creative companies like us. We are not only media partners of these realities, thanks to our ramified network that we have built up over the past years, we manage to connect the most diverse initiatives and organizations. That's a lot of work, but it's also fun.

So what do you offer?
We create and organize events and projects, offer marketing and communication services, realize videos and photo shoots, do scouting and mentoring of new talents and here it gets more specific:  Ads + Services

And how do you actually finance yourselves?
Right from the start, we focused on two areas that are no walk in the park: Culture and publishing. Over the years, we have become what we are now: a creative company. Like all businesses, we want to create added value for our region and are convinced that this added value can be monetized in the long term. At the moment, we finance ourselves through advertising space and services. We have received funds from public authorities once or twice, but our goal is to be and work completely independent of public funding. In our opinion, our work has added value not only for society, but also for the local economy. And recently, there is the FranzFriends - a network of people who know us, read us, share our values, appreciate us and our work, and therefore support us with a donation. Do you also want to become a FranzFriend?
